This morning Jack left for a few days at "Astro Camp".
From now until Friday he will do all manner of fun things including a space walk simulation done in the pool, some zip line action and evening star walks where you, wait for it, turn. Off. Your. Flashlight.
So last night, we had a little Bon Voyage dinner... taco salad prepared by the traveler and eaten in the courtyard.
Do you see the small blackness of Jones... hiding behind Eva and hoping she will share some of her dinner with him...
This little creature joined us... um, anyone know what kind of spider this is and should I be concerned?

These two noticed the limes were looking plentiful... so they picked them...

This morning, Jacked checked in with some friends on the way to school... making sure everyone had their deck of cards, gum and spending money.
The buses were there when we arrived...

I have no idea what kind of spider that is but it looks fucking scary to me!
Jill - Well, the buses arrived safely and they are busy diving into their various cabins and unrolling their sleeping bags!
Anon - Astro Camp is a few days up in the local mountains... it's a "field study"... very cool program.

Ok, I'm not a spider expert (and don't play one on tv), but it looks like a red huntsman spider. I say you pack it up and head for the hills (or perhaps a nice spa?) until the exterminator arries.
Key Lime pie -- that's what you do with all those limes.
As for the spider, do you not have a big brave man living in your house? Arachnid hunting is HIS job.
Call an exterminator cause that thing looks like it's gonna eat Eva.
No idea about the spider, but red is never a good color with insects, right?

Jen - Hugh is that person who scoops spiders up and releases them into the yard. I killed one once and you would have thought I deliberately ran over a dog... I now have to squash them on the sly.
Issa - It really is quite big... and creepy.
Los - Is that right? Red = danger in nature? That is actually a really handy tip!

I always wanted to go to a camp like that when I was younger.
And that spider is very frightening. I screamed at a tiny small one in the bathroom awhile ago. I can't imagine what I would have done had I come into contact with that sucker.

My daughter went to Astrocamp last year and absolutely loved it. I think that was her favorite part of 5th grade.
I wouldn't worry about the spider, and I say that not knowing what it is. It's just that most of them around here are harmless to humans (plus, we're a lot bigger) and they eat other unwanted bugs. It doesn't look like a brown recluse, which has a narrower abdomen, and I don't think it's a widow (immature black widows can be brown). We've seen quite a few black widows around here lately; they're the only ones I kill with abandon.
BTW, red on an insect isn't always dangerous to humans--think of the cute ladybug!

Kayce - exactly... it's "Space" themed science.
Denise - My older son went last year as well and loved it... I know Jack will too... in fact, he said, "You'll miss me but I'll be too busy to miss you"!!
As for the spider... right now it lives, but if I see it again, there could be a different ending to this story.

The spider....nasty and full of babies - hence the anormity of the abdomen...it may well eat Eva, then you... and it would most definitely have eaten Jack so it is good that he is at camp.
I think we had the same spider here but she was brown...yours is scarily red.
