How do you describe blogging to someone who is perplexed by the idea of putting it "all out there" on the Internet?
The "why?" and the "what's the point?" and the "is it ego driven?"
My answer was along the lines of "Um, cuz... there is stuff to say and you know, the uh? support? and um, you know..."

For someone who reads blogs, they more or less get it. It's just a matter of how much they'd be willing to share themselves on their own blog. Obviously, some bloggers are more private and don't use real names, while other bloggers put it all out there.
For people who don't read blogs, my experience is that they don't get and they will never get it, so I don't even talk about blogging with them.
Oddly enough, my 80+ year old grandmother is trying to figure out how she can get online and read my blog, whereas my 35 year old sister refuses to read them.
I think blogging is a nice way to share things with friends and family in lieu of writing 10 letters...As far as the general public, I think its a nice way to know we're not alone in how we view the world or deal with daily life...if that makes sense??? Its a form of reaching out to those that you probably would never meet in person, but are possibly similar in many ways and enjoy reading about similar views. Okay, was that pathetic???
What everyone else said. Either you get it or you don't. It baffles me that some of my friends still don't even know what a blog is. DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS!!! How can that BE?
I'm so with Shelley on this one! Ha! It's my hobby! I also finally after 30 some odd years got my dad to listen to me. And now he reads my blog daily. whoda thunk!
I can't really explain it. I started it for my friends and family to see what was up with us. But some people just don't get it. I have a friend who is actually annoyed by the idea. she says it is selfish because I expect her to be updated on my life (which I don't)without having to be updated on hers...whatever...
I had that conversation a few months ago with the dad of a playdate. At first I could tell he thought I was a schmuck for putting all of that work into something for free. When I told him I mak a bit of money by putting ads on the site, he changed his opinion. He then thought I was a scumball. And he was firing these questions at me, using some very loaded words. I was thrown because "Dude. Its Friday night. I'm just here to pick up my son from his playdate with your kid!"
Some people will never "get it". Here's hoping whoever you explained it to, did "get it."
I didn't "get" them either until my sister-in-law began blogging and through her blog and comments she gets I have found some blogs dealing with autistic children and since my son has autism I think this is wonderful!
I am a blogging-newby and so am presently dealing with "putting it all out there." Not quite comfortable here, yet.... but am loving the learning process.

i do it all for the nookie
I do it for the paparazzi.
While I don't have my own blog, I read several on a daily basis and I think that they are simply a "new" form of communication.
Like Jen said, people who don't read blogs, they aren't going to get it until they do.
I do it for the ego boost. :)
Not really, but that's definitely a nice perk.

people who don't read blogs, or post on message boards, or flickr.. simply, don't get it. it's something you have to experience to truly get. :)

I blog because I have no friends. Um, except for those I've met through blogging. :)
Funny you should bring this up. Roger was asking me the same question: Why I blog.
"Because I enjoy it. It's my hobbie."
And I go no further ...unless the person asking is genuinely curious about it. Rog is not ...he's more of the critical/sarcastic ilk.
Hey, it beats talking to yourself!
And just think of all the free food!
