I was all huh? Why? Come here and let me take a whiff.
I stuck my nose right up in his tween pit and announced, with all honesty, that he did not smell.... yet, but yes, the day was coming when he would probably be a little ripe and did he want to get a head start and buy deodorant?
Well, he told me... after P.E., our classroom really stinks... and I was thinking, maybe I should get some... mumble, mumble, mumble...
So yesterday, we spent what felt like an hour but was probably only 5 minutes, sniffing all the different deodorants available... and let me tell you, there are like eleventy-seven different varieties on the market. I was pushing for "no scent" or Irish Spring because smelling like soap is pleasant but no, the child young man picked AXE in "Vice".
And now my first born has the Axe Effect.
Somebody send wine.
Soon.

I noticed my 6.5 (!) year old had BO the other day... it seems to have been an isolated incident but I think he's WAY too young to have it!! But pathetic, emotional, pregnant me thought it was cute :)
I don't think Axe works very effectively... but maybe when you are 11 it's enough?
You know how girls develop earlier and all that stuff? (If you don't know this, you will when Eva's older.) Well, my 9 y.o. just started wearing deodorant this week.
Wait until both of your boys are big and hairy and stinky and whatnot. :-0
Amy - maybe someone smelly hugged him? B.O. transfer, perhaps?? :-)
Jen - Luv's Baby Soft?!
You know what's really scary? I haven't bought deodorant for my 16 year old yet. I've supplied him with one stick...four years ago. What the hell?
(and hey - come see me!...you'll figure it out! ;-)
I think it's great that he is comfortable talking to you about these things!
My 24 year old nephew has been living with me ever since I bought my teeny weeny beach house. (beach house = instant popularity)
Anyway...he uses unscented deodorant but then he bathes in AXE. It just takes my breath away. He insists that the girls like it...
Guess it's a good thing I'm not dating men in their 20's.
Axe is way marketed to the youngsters, basically promising increased sex, from what I can tell in seeing the commercials.
I have concluded that I may miss the next 7 years of Wyatt's development due to a vodka-induced fog. I vomit in my mouth everytime I think of him and some unweilding patch of pubic hair.
AAARRRRGGGHHHH!
Jenn
Sabrina - I'm coming to see you!
Marisa - Thanks, I hope things stay this way!
Tami - teeny-weeny beach houses are my speciality.
Los - Are you trying to kill me?
Jenn - EWWWWW!!
The Boy is a sweater (not the knitted kind). He wakes up almost every morning just drenched in sweat and if he spends even a half hour in the sun, his hair is matted to his head from sweat. I imagine with that one, I'll be buying the deoderant early. And here's a dumb question... Did you have to take him with you? Could you have just picked something out and he would have had to like it? I don't know cuz one of my kids still watches Blue's Clues and the other can't talk. Just taking notes for future reference...
So funny. Slugger and I just did that last week. I get the armpit in the nose treatment a lot, too. You're a nicer mom than me, though. I firmly ruled out anything Axe or otherwise cologne-ish smelling. He ended up with a Speedstick.
Oh girl, I'm write behind you. My oldest is 10 and the boobs and pimples have started. I keep thinking I'm not old enough to be the mother of a 10 year old.
Axe? Oh, wow. I got my 13 year old boy a way less sexy brand. You know, the kind old men use! I'm so very protective.
I guess you should look on the bright side - atleast it was tampon or bra shopping!?!
oh no, he's gonna spray the axe on and then the barflys will come jump on him.
oh dear GOD! my almost 16 yr old little brother is OBSESSED with AXE. we had to have an intervention.
good luck!
Ooops -- was half asleep when I left my comment -- I mean to say WASN'T!
Jill - Yeah, he had to come along... he was driving the deodorant train...
Maggie - I should have pushed harder for the Irish Spring! It smelled clean and youthful... not whore-magnetish like the Axe!
Slacker - Ye gods... I keep hearing about the girls and it's got me NERVOUS!
Chrissie - I knew what you meant ;-)
FB - Like, Los, you are clearly trying to kill me.
Kim - apparently, we have the demographic!
Oh hun...welcome to the club. I too tried my hardest to go with the no smell keep it mellow like a baby smell, but was told that AXE was what he "needed". Wait till jr. high when he needs the spray axe in his pe locker. ummmm
Hah! Funny! Welcome to the world of "armpit glue" (as Miss G calls it).
You're right ...the amount of deodorant brands on the market just boggles the mind.
Gillie asked for deodorant around 3 months ago. So off to the market we went to sample the seven scents of "Teen Spirit" by Lady Speed Stick, before settling on the "Fun Spirit" scent of "Degree Girl" which offers "protection for every OMG moment!"
What a bizarre little right of passage. When I think of growing up milestones, I think "the talk," first periods, and pimples.
This one caught me a little by surprise (probably because back in my day, this wasn't an issue until teenage years). And then we had maybe 10 brands to choose from ...each with a choice of "rose pedals" or "baby powder" scents.
Just don't get him the Axe cologne - trust me.
gawd... all of those Axe scents are really POWERFUL. Good luck breathing. haha.
At least he came to you instead of you having to go to him. I felt like I was walking on eggshells when I broke it to my daughter that she needed deodorant. My sister convinced me to put it in a goody basket with a bunch of other girly things, you know, to soften the message. It worked!
Help is on the way! Would you like a shiraz, a pinot, or merlot? ;-)
As for the Axe effect... Let's hope that doesn't "kick in" until he's at least 16. Or maybe 30.
Thanks for the comment you left on my blog! I am a fledgling, having fun figuring it all out.
Love your writing, and look forward to reading more......
Oh, wow! Sounds like your baby is growing up. Next thing you know he will be bringing home a girlfriend.
Best wishes!
