It's (Most Likely) My Kind of Town

So Hugh and I are going to Chicago on the 14th which is last minute but fun and I am rather excited because I have never been there and also, I get to wear a coat.

We have friends who are maybe moving/transferring and Hugh has some business to take care of so it just sort of came together... but it is also about twelve kinds of ridiculous because we come home on Sunday, and the very next day the kids and I leave for Hawaii (because my mom just got married and we want to celebrate) which is a lot of travel and makes one feel like a shabby planner.
I am hoping to eat here and meet her, but I would welcome any and all suggestions for important things like - excellent shoe stores and smooth cocktails and, do any of you live there?

Well you know there is another fabulous Kristin that lives there (or close to there) with a set of gorgeous twins. :) I'm just sayin.

The fabulous Kristin in my city? Dress warmly, we're currently enjoying 30 below zero wind chills... And if you've got a free minute to meet for a drink or a cup of coffee, let me know!!

Oh, and... Lori's shoes on Armitage... Poppy will know what I'm talking about.

I used to live in Chicago, but many of my old haunts are in Hyde Park, south side. "If you go down there you better just beware of a man named Leroy Brown."

Doubt you'd be interested. Still, have a great time! Chicago is fun to visit.

I have to tell you, wearing a coat gets old pretty quickly.

12 kinds of ridiculous? How many kinds are there?

CDJ - I'd love to hook up for coffee... I'll email you as our plans solidify and thanks for the shoe tip!

DGM - not THE Leroy Brown? The baddest man in the whole damn town? You're right... I'll tread lightly.

Joe - the ridiculous levels are up to roughly eleventy-five.

I've been wanting to visit Chicago, I don't have any recommendations for you, just envy.

Oh yes I do live there!

You MUST eat at blackbird -- you will love it. Also excellent: 1. avec, owned by same people, much more casual (although you could actually wear dressed up jeans to blackbird), communal eating, mediterranean tapas, great wine list, loud but fun) 2. Naha, also excellent and beautiful room, hmmm...email me if you want more, hubby is in a related biz so we have a long list, but I am a blank since Alex was up at 4:40...

Shoe's -- yes Lori's as CDJ mentioned, huge beautiful Cole Haan on Michigan Ave., again with the blank, but I must know more

You're going to love it!!! I don't have good recommendations for shoes or cocktails (I was stuck in a hotel last time I was there and pregnant the time before that). But yes, dress warmly and have fun!! Just walk into any cool looking joint downtown and I'm sure you'll score.

I've never been to Chicago ... or Hawaii for that matter. Those are 2 places I need to visit!

Going to Chicago on Valentines Day?

1. Bundle up.
2. Get restaurant tips from Poppy.
3. I also suggest Topolobampo (or Frontera Grill)
4. Make restaurant reservations ASAP!
5. Lori's is excellent. There are loads of great shoe stores in Chicago. No doubt Poppy can help you with shoes, too!

Any chance you can forgo the direct flights and make a stop in Denver to see me, too? That would be so cool.

I've only traveled to Chicago with children in tow, so I can really only recommend things like the American "I'm in Hell" Girl store and various museums.

Don't you ever stay home?

If you can expense dinner, go for Tru...it's blissful. If you can't get in to Blackbird, call your concierge connection, but a good alternative is Spring. Lastly, Cro Bar for cocktails is fun, but can be too much of a scene on a weekend.

I'm flattered that anyone would think I'd know about shoe stores, but to tell the truth, I spent way too long living in Hyde Park on the South Side, which was so shopping-challenged that I used to mail order my clothes.

And now I have to check out Lori's Shoes, which means I won't have time to meet Kristin when she comes to Chicago.

Only kidding. I plan to hide under her table at Blackbird and pretend to be a dog. Maybe someone will slip me a bite of something.

I love Chicago! Don't forget to go shopping on the Magnificent Mile. Take a stroll along the lake. They have a nice aquarium there, too. Maybe get tix to Oprah? eat at Michael Mina....very good (if you like small portions but yummy food and great presentation)

Chicago is awesome, but damn cold right about now.
Car service? It's pretty easy to get a cab in the loop and not terribly pricey.
Rosebud is a good Italian restaurant.
Lots of good ethnic restaurants- that's usually the route we go. Are you with kids or without?
