At least it is in your backyard and not, let's say, your basement.

it kinda looks like a chinchilla actually.

I don't know, but I'm shuddering from three time zones away AND I pulled my feet off the floor.

My guess is rat and only because I have spent the past 2 months trying to get rid of what they are calling "palm rats" - they are not in my house - thank God but are getting into my bedroom lanai flooring. Yuck - the one I have seen caught looked a lot like your friend - Happy Thanksgiving.

Most likely it's previous shelter was destroyed in the fire. I'll bet there's a ton less rats out there these days.

But yeah ewwwwwwwww.

It's kinda cute....Except for the tail. The tail gives me the creeps....It's soooooo thick! Ewwww!

OMG!!! Well at least it's not a snake?

Looks Like a chinchilla.

It does look like a chinchilla, which is kinda cute, except that tail is really horrifying.

Really cute minus the tail, but I wouldn't want it in my house.

My wife saw a mouse in our house ... she stayed over her parents' house for two nights ... ugh!

If it's a goddamn chinchilla I am making a coat.

It kinda looks chinchilla-ish, but my guess is it's a opossum. (I think the ears are too big and the tail too fat for a rat). I've seen them in this area. You might want to call animal control since these critters carry all manner of disease and parasites. Also, I don't recommend befriending it.

Oh god, I'm going to have nightmares about that tail for months!!!!!!!!!!!

Gracencameronsmomy said...

do you have a bird feeder out there?they attract rats... didn't it run away when it saw you? Why do I think it is cute!

Wendy said...

It's hard to tell, but it could be an opposum. We had them all the time in Yorba Linda. They'll eat any pet food left outside.

Kristin said...

Hugh and I think it looks like a "hybrid"... a mouse + rat = "rouse" or "mat".

ditzymoi said...

yep possum family probably - but those ears are so mousey ewwwwwwww!

I Think it's kind of cute. Even with the tail. Happy Thanksgiving! Let's plan a get together before Christmas. It has been far too long. My sis is coming to visit first weekend in December.

I don't think any uninvited animal is good. Sorry you won't be able to go outside ever again.

OMG!!! I'd never leave again!

Is that its tail? It would be cute if it weren't for the creepy tail. Or is that its penis? Baboons have long penises but that is not a baboon. I only know about baboon penises because I spend way too much time at the zoo. Get your head out of the gutter!

Nice...

Perhaps you should keep it as a pet for Eva

Holy Mary Mother of God, what the hell is that?

It looks like a furry armedillo (or however the hell you spell that).

Itching...
Itching... Grimacing...
But have no clue of what that creature is...
And why... Why it gives me the heeby geebies...

It's a RAT! Best way to get rid of it is to get the big glue traps. Bait the traps with beef jerky and hot sauce, put them against the walls and wait. Then when the RATfink gets stuck, smash it with the back of a shovel!

My Ketel one and tonic awaits.

Happy Thanksgiving!

RUN!!!!!

I'm running from the screen because that, my dear, is one disgusting looking thing.

I don't even care WHAT it is.

Call the exterminator!

Shelley said...

Hey Kristin - Rich will even mount its head on your wall if you want. :)

I love rats. Well, the kind from a pet store anyway!

Grim Reality Girl said...

Really cute except for the tail.... possum like? Hmmm....... I'd keep the dogs in the house too.... my greyhound would hurt himself chasing this creature....

Rats make great pets. I'm seriously thinking of getting two for my girls. Not that I would suggest making that one a pet........ Maybe a little showing of Ratatouille would make you feel better? OK, get out the trap.

Jenny said...

I don't know but like everyone else that tail is really grossing me the hell out.

Anonymous said...

Ewww....looks like a opossum to me too. It’s just a baby but still nasty though.

Gah!

Several years ago, the nursing home that was close to our old house was working on their sewer lines. And as a result, the rats started finding other places to hang out. Like our garbage cans. One day, as I was throwing a full bag into the can, one rat jumped out of the can not but more than one foot away. GAH. It scared the POO out of me.

But the rats had babies so we also had baby rats to contend with. So we got some rat poison and killed the ones in the garage and under our deck. And then the dog would find them and we'd freak out because we didn't want the dog getting sick from the poison.

While cleaning out the garage this past June guess what I found? A dehydrated rat carcass fromt that time. Nice, huh?

Just thought I'd share...

Hope your little friend decides to skee-daddle very, very soon.

Did the ChinChilla eat your computer... I look every single day for a new post... something witty and fun, something to make he laugh out loud. No pressure.. ~lmao~ but I miss it

how ironic the word verification is leaev... almost leave...and so i will

Shelley said...

Oh my gawd ...we're still on the rat!

Gross.

Not a possum, for sure. They are WAY grosser-looking than that (google image search opossum and you will see what i am talking about.)

Chinchillas have giant, adorable ears.

I'm afraid it's just a gross, old rat.

Can't believe I missed this picture! It is quite definitely a rat!!! But day time viewing is odd!

It is huge however - but then you don't have to talk to me about rat invasions. We have had a whole family if you recall in the attic... the Ratton family. Louis and brothers...and then remember there was the one in our sofa...the last remaining Ratton brother....

And then remember....Lucas the cute exterminator... the only good thing about the whole darn thing...

Hope Ratton's counsin stays way a way from you!
