Clique Here

Who thinks that cliques are just for kids? That they go away with maturity? That after high school, they're no longer a part of your adult life?

Because if you do...

You'd be wrong.

Pretty sure I'm not alone here... does your life suffer from clique-dom? Are you the leader of a clique? The most popular mommy in the sandbox/preschool/Junior League?

Or, are you beginning to want to be a loner? Does talk of juice boxes and pilates leave you cold?

Do you like your Interenets more than your MOMs Club?

Did you accidentlyonpurpose forget to go to the pirate themed party last Saturday?

And are you more excited for summer than your kids?

P.S. - I am not in any sort of panic over here... just wondering if this was a phenomena was nationwide.

You'd like to think that you can escape cliques after high school, BUT THEY'RE ALWAYS THERE.

Umm...I'm not a mommy or a daddy, but I am a 38 year old man. And this sounds vaguely, fucking familiar.

And I often think of a house in the country by a babbling brook, with big weeping willow trees, with dogs and horses and pigs and goats and chickens.

And I often think of throwing lit fire crackers at people as well.

Oh, Kevin... save a cherry bomb for me...

I hate the cliques. Hate them!

I'm praying there won't be too many at BlogHer--heh.

I just don't have the energy to try to be THAT cool.

I swear, high school never really ends.

Yes, they continue and I am feeling like that anti-social, anti-clique mommy - feels alot like high school...with the exception of the mommy part.

I got a good taste of it on Friday and it made me ill. The caked on makeup, the high maintenance mommies, the gossip, and the "well are you..because it is a must for our girls"

Give me a f'ing break.

You know... In the first few weeks of Seth's preschool, various mom cliques were forming. Alot of moms would get to school early with their kids, wait in the hallway until the classroom door opened and chat. And they'd get to school early, wait in the hallway to chat when picking up the kids.

I get migraines alot so there were many a day I dropped Seth off a few minutes late and looked like a homeless person while doing so. I'd also pick him up a minute or two after the door would open. Apparently, if I was looking to belong to a clique, I missed my opportunity. Cause the rest of the year, while some people were nice, others were downright cold. And they'd make big deals out of inviting each other to lunch (with kids) to various restarants after class but not invite me.

So yeah, I understand what you're saying. You aren't alone. I feel like fellow bloggers "get" me moreso. Is that how you feel too?

I am tired of being nice... isn't that awful!?

Pirate theme party? For adults?

I stick to myself and avoid anything having to do with other moms like the plague. I'm sure the other moms in the hood think I am a bitch. They'd be right. ;)

No, you're not alone. I don't have kids, but there are clicques at work and everywhere else. It's sad when your work life someitmes sounds like it did in middle school.

I so hate cliques!!!! We have WAY too many of them here in my oh so small town. And being a gal of many tastes and much not like the others, I tend to not be included in "certin" crowds. Fuck em I always say...

By the way...31 hours till school is out for us!!!! I'm just gonna sleep in the school parking lot until then...

I think I'm the only Mama on my street who shops at Target and (gasp) doesn't wear makeup to the grocery store... Seriously.

Yep, I'm a pariah.

K - I swear to God, I was just about to post on this very topic. Now I'll just send everyone here. :)

So I'm curious ...Just how does one manage to get "uninvited" to a monthly Bunco group she never wanted or asked to belong to in the first place?

Yep. That's me. The shunned.

I gotta tell ya, this status suits me just fine. I'm more than happy to be the loner I am. No pretenses here. What you see is what you get. I'm not a cliquey Mom, and am annoyed by those who are. Fuck 'em.

BTW - I was delighted to be able to call the neighborhood "clique leader" (and my neighbor of 7 years) out on the carpet. She practically stumbled over herself trying to save face.

It was a beautiful thing.

heh heh

I'm part of a clique. We're called the Poker Girls, and we're anti-clique, so we formed our own clique. Anyone can join in our fun, but they've got to be prepared to talk about things other than "mommy topics". We get to the down and dirty ... and it's awesome! We're not very lady like when we're together ... and that's why it's so much fun!

Dude. Totally. And it's really been getting to me lately. And I don't know how to avoid it, either. The cliques just make me so tired...

Effin' A! OF COURSE cliques still exist - women suck for the most part - we are *evil* and torturous to other women. Hands down, we are the tougher sex to be friends with - even though I am THRILLED and LOVE and ADORE my friends! And we are quite boring in large groups (any readers out there, don't get your panties twisted, I tried Junior League VALIANTLY for 2 years and respect what they have done to build the arts/humanities in communities, but I canNOT deal with that many women talking at once. Eeew, get me some men-folk to balance it out! Puhlease!).

Dude, I am an introverted extrovert. Sometimes ya gotta hide out from the cliques and just watch some bad tv, like old episodes of "Kate and Allie" on WE TV! :)

Or make a big batch o' Rice Krispie treats w/ the kiddos and eat it right from the hot pan off a wooden spoon. Mmmmm

Yes, it's nationwide.

And yes, I can't wait for the last day of preschool (next week, baby) so that I can stop making nice with the skinny mom with the pink lipstick all over her teeth.

Bring on the summer!

I see cliques here in blogistan too. It's very much like high school out here too. It can't be avoided. Human nature...I guess.

Definately cliques here, my one friend's husband calls them the Stepford Wives, LOL! I actually completely embarrassed myself by calling one of them (who I actually know pretty well) the wrong name in the grocery store...but seriously, they do all look alike--tall, thin, blonde, lifted etc. Individually, they have been nothing but nice, to me anyway. But somehow there is still that exclusive thing going on. Thankfully, we live in a pretty relaxed place, and the number of women who aren't "cliquey" outnumber the ones who are. I think you can just choose not to engage in it.

oh good lawd. yes, cliches are EVERYWHERE. I was a nerd in high school and I still am. *sigh* But, I hate social events and dread somebody inviting us to do anything, so I think that might be part of my problem. Ya think? :) HOWEVER, I do wish I had a girlfriend to go out and party with, like really let loose and just have a good time. Have none of those girlfriends in real life and it's quite sad really. *sigh again* I am so straight laced that I doubt anybody would even imagine I would like to go out and really let loose....

dodo said...

they're everywhere. i never get any better at understanding them hence never know what to say when I bump in to one. The internets hardly ever tire me out just wondering what to say.

On the kid variety, I told P the other day, after come cliquy kids at a party were excluding her from bouncy castle fun, that there were always going to be people like that, and that if she wanted to bounce, she should go ahead and do it anyway.

PetiteMommy said...

Yep they're everywhere and I never belong and here I thought all this HS crap was over. It's a god thing I just dont care anymore. :)

Occidental Girl said...

Yeah, cliques? Are here in Central Oregon in the form of "I live in Bend and you f*cking Redmondites are pieces of shit!"

It's lovely.

Sudiegirl said...

i'm not a mom but i think cliques still exist. they're more subtle but just as catty as them glorious high school days.

that's why i hang out with men more than women...
