Does anyone out there get migraines?

Please help me.

It's fading, but for about 2 hours I thought I was going to throw up and I was shaky and really couldn't get off the couch.

How do I know if it is just a bad headache or an actual migraine?

The worst headache ever.

In other words, what the fuck do I take to make it go away?

That sounds like a migraine to me. Hugs! There's some stuff out there you can take when you feel it coming on... (For me, it sometimes makes them worse though...) But see a doctor and he or she can hook ya up with some stchuff...

And if you can chart them, you can figure out what your triggers are (stress, hormones, weather patterns, allergies, various foods, even birth control pills, etc)... SO you can avoid those things and keep the migraines to a minimum. Good luck lady. I know how horrible those are!

I get them. They suck...Sometimes Excedrin Migraine works, but I usually take imitrex. THere isn't much you can do but lay down in a dark roomwith a cool towel on your head...Sorry! Good Luck!

Definitely a migraine. I get milder ones and I'm pretty sure no other type of headache makes you nauseous or senstive to noise and light. I agree with lisa about avoiding triggers. Usually 3 motrin (I know, more than the recommended dose) or Excedrin Migraine work for me. It's very strange at first that pain medecine can make a queasy stomach disappear. If those don't do the trick, definitely see a doctor.

I should say it's 3 motrin or 1 or 2 excedrin migraine (don't take three -- it's way too much). The excedrine migraine have tons of caffeine in them so not only will too many hurt your stomach they will keep you awake at night.

Ouch, sorry about that.

Can you just try to sleep it off?

Aw hon, I get migraines on occasion too. I have no solutions for you but I hope you feel better soon. Migraines suck.

I personally like the Coca-Cola/Motrin cocktail. Something in the Coke settles my stomach and the caffeine zips the Motrin into my system faster. I sometimes slather some Vicks on my forehead to make it vaporize the head pain away. Dark room, quiet, and time usually do the trick.

I take Topamax, but it's not for everyone.

Like others have suggested, pay attention to when they come on and discuss it with your doctor. Don't ignore it, there is help!

Have you gotten many? Topamax is yucky stuff....hopefully, you don't have to take anything like that.

2 liquid Gel Advils, 1 bottle of Gatorade and sleep!

Most people get headaches because they get dehydrated - the Gatorade is excellent.

It's also great on hangovers!

I wouldn't recommend the Topamax either....certainly not as a starting point.

Sounds like a migraine and sometimes it does take some experimenting to find what works. Talk to your healthcare provider about it though. There are good med options if the over-the-counters you have tried aren't working.

Also, hiding in the dark with a cool washcloth helps...ah, just saw someone suggested that.

A friend of mine gets them all the time. She started taking fish oil and they've almost stopped. If she does get one now, it's super mild.

HOpe it doesn't last too long.....

Only thing that works for me is laying in bed with NO NOISE AND NO LIGHT AT ALL with a cool rag on my head.

I never had them enough to get a presciption but I hear Excedrine Migrane is pretty good.

Jill said...

Sounds like a migraine. The only thing that used to help me was to sleep it off -- in a very dark room, with my eyes covered. They make prescription medication for it if you get them often, but I also hear that Excedrin works well (that's what my mom takes)

I have no advice...I don't get migranes. But I hope you feel better.

I've been getting them since I was about 18. You need to see a doc, there are so many choices in medications for these and it sounds like taking something that treats the migraine (like Imitrex) would work for you. Also, I've been prescribed pain medication (vicodin) along with anti nausea.

Weird thing? When they get so bad I feel like throwing up, it is usually the end of the headache and I feel so much better if I just go ahead and do it (throw up). I know that sounds awful, but after 15 years of these, you learn a lot about how your body tolerates them.

So many things can be a trigger and your doctor will help you figure that out.

I am so sorry that you had to join the migraine club. It sucks!!! :(

Sending a stiff drink and lots of quietness your way!

Okay, don't get mad at me for saying this as it may be totally random, but I forgot to mention that some people have treated them with Botox!!!!!

Did you ever have it done? If so, maybe your doc (the headache doc) could see if that would work.

Of course, I've only seen this on the news and have no fact to base it on, I'm just sayin'....I'd try ANYTHING when my head is hurting that bad!!!

Good Luck, sorry for bogarting.

I don't know if this is typical, because God knows I'm NOT normal, but when I have a migrane I am very sensitive to light and sound and I get very sick to my stomach. I know there is a lot of really good medications out there for migranes now, over the counter and by RX.

Aw, I hope you feel better. If you think it's a migraine, it probably is. For me, it's usually because I haven't had caffeine in a while. But if that's not it, maybe your doctor could prescribe some meds for you, which works for my friend who takes Imitrex. Feel better!

Sounds like you've received lots of great advice and although I have nothing brilliant to add, as a fellow sufferer, I wish you a speedy, speedy recovery!

I'm going to try the fish oil that one of your readers suggested! Learn somethin' new every day ...

A teacher used to tell me that dark chocolate helped. It does! I'm pretty sure its the caffeine in it, but hey, an excuse to eat chocolate.

Also - Imitrex is my migraine med, but its perscription.

Hope you feel better!

Sometimes I get headaches so bad that I feel like I'm going to lose my lunch....sorry. It is usually because my neck is out and I need to have a chiropractic manipulation. I hope you feel better.

everyone already said it, so I 'll just wish you a happier head. I get hemiplegic migraines which, among other delights, cause an attractive gob of dribble to trickle down the right side of my chin . . .

Never had a migrane, but from what I hear, it basically paralyzes you (not really, but the pain is so intense, you'd rather not move). There is something on the market that is a long-term "cure" for migranes, but you need to take it every day - can't remember what it's called.

I've never commented before, but I hang around here often... :)

I've gotten migraines since I was a kid - everyone has given great advice already, but do talk to your doctor. If you get them regularly, there's stuff you can take to prevent them. And stuff you can take when you feel one coming on. I take Zomig. OTC stuff doesn't usually work for me when it's a migraine.
I have to have complete silence, a hot rag (or cold, I'm fickle), and total darkness. And sleep. And Vicodin doesn't hurt, either, when there's nothing else.....
Good luck - those things frickin SUCK.

Poor Kristin. Google "migraines" and you might find something useful. I don't get them myself.

Hugs and kisses to make you feel better.

ouch.

i only get the auras w/o the headache, but it does freak my shit out and culminates in full-body twitching. it always happens in the middle of the night and awakens me from a deep sleep. then i pretty much spend the rest of the night awake. in my case, it's definitely tied to my cycle. hasn't happened much since i started taking magnesium. keep a journal of what you eat and where you are in your cycle every time it happens.

sorry. hope you feel better.

I get 'em. I take Imitrex. Works like a charm for me, but some of my friends are completely immune to it. See a neurologist and get ready to experiment. It might take a little while but you'll eventually find the magic pill that will stop those effing headaches in their tracks. By the way, the neurologist will ask you if you want to take "preventative" drugs or drugs that will stop a migraine once you get one. Up to you. The preventative stuff was worse than the migraines for me.

Wheat and dairy products are the biggest cause of allergies. Try eliminating them from your diet.
Finding and releasing trigger points in your neck and shoulders may help, if you can find somebody to do it for you.
Hope you feel better

one of my old nursing profs told me once that taking tylenol and other headache remedies with coke/coffee (any caffeine stuff) makes the med dissolve faster. true but weird fact. i always take that stuff now with pop or coffee! works so much faster.

then again maybe plain ole crack would help?!? LOL!

hope you feel better soon

Some things I have tried
hot towel and a dark room
Ice placed directly where it hurts
a massage
a very hot shower

each has worked at times

I'm a big fan of Zomig, but you'll have to see your doctor.

If the slightest noise is like a spike being driven into your head, the dimmest light makes you feel like your eyes are being poked out, and advil doesn't work, than it's probably a migraine.

I get 'em probably once a month on average, and even with the meds I usually have to find dark, quiet, and usually sleep.

Good luck, and thanks for visiting me!

Feel like you need a sledgehammer? Yup, that's a migraine. I would see your doctor - for me, I need cold a/c, an ice-cold washcloth for my forehead, silence, and a dark room. Sometimes caffeine helps. Usually though, I need meds. Ugh - sorry for you to be joining the club!

That sucks. Hope you feel better and the kids go easy on ya. And I voted for you as the blogger I'd most like to meet. Only because they didn't have a 'blogger I'd most like to live with and watch Urban Cowboy' with category.

I have no idea. I take 4 ibuprofen when I can't take it anymore- and it's rare. Does sound like a migraine though.

I get migraines. They're horrible. I can't do anything if I have one. All I can do is lie in a dark room with a bowl beside me. Moving my eyes hurts. Moving hurts. I can't do ANYTHING.

I always know it's a migraine if my vision gets fucked up. If I see spots, or double, or if I get a little windy snake-like thing that crawls around in my vision, I know it's a migraine. That and the whole can't-get-out-of-bed-to-save-my-life thing.

Hey..did you get my email? Sorry to use this forum for that, but I was trying to set something up with you for next week:)

Feeling any better Kristin?

It's the weekend ... you have to feel better. If you're not, I'm about to come over there and give you a hug.
