My Brain? It Hurts.

Do you see that new profile photo of moi? Shall we take a minute to discuss the endless inner dialogue that occurred before posting of said photo? Do you all want to know that I have posted and deleted that same damn photo eleventy billion times today?

Could I be any lamer.

Here is how my tiny brain works-

First, my oldest child informs me that, as his braces are off, I need to get with the program and update my profile.

Preferably with a photo that does not include him.

So, faced with the options of A) a photo of 2 of my 3 children, which isn't really an option, or, B) a random avatar from Google images, I opt for C), a photo of myself.

Why not? I query my inner self.

Because, my inner self shoots back. We are sick of our own self. We go out of our way not to look in mirrors.

But, I say, I am having a fairly decent hair day.

Get over it, says inner self.

I then tell my inner self to shut up and grab my digital camera.

I take 2, hate them both and my inner self laughs triumphantly.

And I wonder why, at 37, am I so fucking worried about looking, you know, blah.

Why am I not confident enough?

Where is all that confidence I tell my kids to have?

So, there is the photo.

Expect it to be down in 5 minutes.

Because I just realized that, in it, I am not wearing any makeup.

sigh.

So, tell me... is it just me, or do the rest of you also struggle with vanity issues?

Listen, I may not have makeup on, but I am a zealous tweezer. ;-)

Can I use your "no make-up"? Pleeeeease! As my daughter says "pitty, pitty". Yes, you are "pitty"!

Carol - I promise you... not a stitch! But, I will admit to brightening the photo to hide some flaws!

Viva La Photoshop!

There hasn't been a photo taken of me in 3 years that I haven't tweaked to death.

Yeah, I'm pissed that no one has invented a camera that subtracts 10 (or more) pounds. I'd pay a lot of money for that.

I like it! Don't take it down. Don't!

I haven't been brave enough to post a profile picture myself, so hurrah for you already. I am torn between feeling sorry that I'm not the hot chick I was at twenty-five and enjoying the freedom of knowing that as a thirty-seven year old, overweight mom, no one's looking at me anyway so why not wear the ponytail?

In any case, your picture looks juuust fine.

Whataya talking about? It's gorgeous.

Damselfly said...

Heck, lady, you don't need any makeup! Looks great.

I hate you:)

And if that's you without makeup, then you suck. Even with makeup, I look like a hag.

By the way, did you ever drink that champagne? As you can see, I am still thinking about it...

Kristin said...

Jen-

You are a big liar... I have seen your photos and, even 9 months pregnant with Isabel, you are mucho pretty-o.

And omg, I drank that champers the night it arrived... over ice with a slice of orange... and I toasted you MUY times.

-K.

You ridiculous creature! You're gorgeous. Don't make me come over there and give you the talk. Yeah, the talk I need to give myself--that one.

You're lovely. For serious.
PS) My vanity issues would take up all your bandwidth.

It really bugs me when perfectly beautiful women claim not to be. I'm sure you have never had an ugly day in your life.

Kristin said...

Anon-

Oh ho ho... if I weren't so vain I would post those ugly day photos. I have them and they ain't pretty.

Gone are the days I worry about vanity. I am just relieved that I can match my socks to what I am wearing.... YOU are just stunning and should never lack confidence in posting pictures of yourself....

No reason for vanity issues in your case. I guess everyone has them but if you're confident about who you are, vanity matters less. We all still want to look decent but that's another story.

Issues, schmissues!

This coming from someone who took pictures of herself weilding an eyelash curler because I actually got to go somewhere where I should wear some eye make-up!!! Maybe I'll share it . . . maybe.

You look great, I love good hair days!

I like you look gorgeous in that photo! But yes, I struggle with the same issues (thus using my son's lovely face instead of mine)!

I think it is a gorgeous photo and you are one hot mama!

My current profile photo was used in a post to show my hair because some beyotch told me I had "mom hair" - then a commenter said I should use the mom hair photo for my profile so I did.

Regarding your tweezer zealotism... help - I can NOT catch the hairs in the tweezers. I HAVE to go to the threading lady or be caterpillar brow.

I noticed your new pic when I posted on Lena's site today. I like it. And yes, I have my own big fat set of vanity issues. Let's not get me started.

HELL YES ! I feel the same! Today I cancelled meeting up with people because I thought I looked TOO PALE!

Ok if I could get a beeYoutiful picture of myself, I'd post it in my profile and then I would comment on a billion blogs so that my photo would be everywhere...

Yesterday I made ugly faces at myself in my mirror. I shocked myself with my ability to succeed at this game. I was glad there were no witnesses.

You are gorgeous!

Mrs. T said...

Yes I have vanity issues, but unlike you, I have reason to.
Gorgeous pic.

We all have vanity issues.

You still look great, even if you don't have any make up on so shut your pie hole LOL

It took me almost three years to post my picture on my blog. that should tell you something.

You are a hotmamma!

Glinda said...

No struggles here, I'm a goddess and I know it;)

Let the picture up, natural beauty is very rare, and you've got it--work it baby, work it.

Los said...

the pic looks fantastic ... no need to have vanity issues with this one!

Anonymous said...

I struggle with those same demons.

MommyHeadache said...

I feel pretty positive about myself these days because I am down to a good weight and I feel pretty sexy. The only thing I actually ever think is not so hot are my saggy tits and sometimes I even don't mind them. And I am not just saying this, but you are really beautiful. Seriously!

Anonymous said...

You look that hot and you're not even wearing lipstick?

Is it too late for me to give you a lapdance?

Jill said...

Gorgeous, yet without being too "look at me, I'm beautiful." Keep it.

I've gone through that conflict with the profile picture too. Right now the pic is of me from behind. "But do people really want to have to look at my butt" I stressed. Since it's modestly covered, I went with it.

kitchu said...

I'm the girl who forgets to look in the mirror. I have no idea why. I don't worry so much about my face I guess. I have issues with my body, but often I just don't look in the mirror. I think that's kind of weird for a girl, you know?

As for your photo, 2 things struck me. One, very cool "self portrait" and love the angle of the photo, no sure how you achieved that by yourself. Two, gorgeous hair, great eyes, and the expression leaves you wondering, "what is she thinking?" so I'm digging that.

Leave it up. It works. And you're gorgeous, nose hairs and all (thanks Johnny, now we're all looking)!

Debbie said...

of course not.

p.s. not that I would ever admit to it in front of someone as le gorgeous as you.

sayin'.

Nice picture! I'd definitely keep it up there if I were you.

I'm thinking of replacing mine with a picture of Dick Cheney just to get everyone riled.

It is a lovely shot...
As all the shots you post...
You are one hot babe...

Now, I feel intense pressure to write a blog so that I may have the new updated shot...
I love all the profile shots your post... from your family to the the one with the beaming Kristin smile...

Its kinda like a baseball card...
I have my collection of Kristin and Jessica shots on my blog... and I feel honoured...

Kevin Charnas said...

DON'T YOU DARE TAKE THAT PHOTO DOWN!!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL! Seriously. And WITHOUT make up?

Damn. My girl is HOT!

It's true, Kristin. If you fucking take that gorgeous photo down, I'm driving to Laguna and spankin' your ass.

Scribbit said...

I know what you mean. Putting a picture of myself was almost harder than starting the blog in the first place. But your photo is beautiful, you're very photogenic.

Kristin said...

You all are so sweet... and Kevin, promising to spank me... you lover you!

I am selfishly relieved to know that there is a lot of room on the vanity therapy couch... chock full of women who all think everyone but them is gorgeous.

If only we saw ourselves the way others see us.

Vanity! YUCK!!! Why are women so pressured to look BEAUTIFUL! Growing up in SoCal I grew up thinking if you didn't look perfect to go out and get milk you were ugly. Now that I'm in my 30's and living in another world (Santa Cruz) I'm sooooo over it! I still do try to look my best when I go out to get milk, but I don't spend a hour doing it.

BTW - YOU LOOK HOT Kristin!!!

You are one gorgeous woman. Don't take the picture down!
And hell, yes, I struggle with vanity issues. I wish I could say I didn't care about how I looked, but I'd be lying.

I've got more issues than just vanity.

So, Ms. Saxy thang, fear not. Lookin' vanitylicious.

Perstephone said...

Vanity issues have gone wild for me. A little less than a year ago I was diagnosed with post-partum and you can almost date it perfectly based on pictures. It's all in the eyes, hair and skin for me. Blah. Now I feel like I look like I have aged 5-7 years. This is why I've stopped including pictures of myself in my blog (when I do blog, of course). Damn, if I had known that depression was the disease for advanced aging I would not have put off the drugs for as long as I did. Seriously.

Personally, I think you are freaking gorgeous. Really.

Tori said...

I am late to this post! I know you very well and I agree with anon. Shut the hell up!
You never have an ugly day - only days when your hair goes a little wild. Even in the hospital gown and wearing your black glasses you still look fab. So enough with the self doubt b'yatch.

But how cool that 58 people helped to reaffirm...

Now head over to my blog and tell me how beautiful I am - fuckers!!!!!
